Safety Situational Awareness –

What is it and Why is it Important?

It’s a Saturday morning and you’re in the mood to do some shopping. There are all sorts of sales going on and you’re determined to cash in on some of them. You got to the mall just as the stores opened and, three hours later, even though you’re not tired of shopping, you are tired of lugging all your overstuffed bags around. So, you leave the mall, go out to the parking lot, and toss your bags into the backseat of your car. And now that you’re hands free, you’re refreshed and ready for round 2.

An hour later, you’re weighed down again with more fully stuffed bags. But this time, you’re also full of shopping. You leave the mall looking forward to getting back home and taking inventory of all the stuff you bought. As you get close to your car, you notice there’s broken glass outside the driver’s side rear door, then you see the window is smashed in and your back seat is empty. All the hundreds of dollars in great bargains you bought just a couple of hours ago have been stolen.

Sound ridiculous? This scenario happens all over this country, all year long, not just during the holiday season. It’s a hassle, it’s costly, and it’s very invasive as it leaves you feeling violated, stressed, and really unlucky. You start thinking . . .

Why did this happen to me?

Why did I park there?

Why didn’t I just hang onto my bags while I shopped?

Why did I go back in the mall and shop more? I should have just gone home.

What’s this damage going to cost me? Is this claim going to increase my insurance? How long will I be without a car?

If you had safety situational awareness, you never would have had to ask yourself the first question. In fact, your entire day would have been on a different, and better trajectory if only you tapped into the safety situational awareness training that Safe Sense provides.

So, what is safety situational awareness?

You’ve come to the right place for the answer to that question. Guiding people to understand, internalize, and develop safety situational awareness is the sole mission and purpose of Safe Sense.

In effect, we advocate safety situational awareness as everyone’s weapon of choice when it comes to preventing and mitigating the chances of becoming a victim of “pedestrian” crimes – meaning crimes like assault, robbery, and theft.

Simply put, safety situational awareness is being mentally present, i.e., mindful, so that you know – intuitively – the dynamics of the environment, situation, or circumstance you’re in and the potential risks or hazards it presents.

Not to be confused with fear or anxiety, safety situational awareness is like having a sixth sense.  It’s the ability to know or feel that something might not be “right” beyond what your five senses are revealing to you.  Oftentimes, if something (or someone) doesn’t feel right, it isn’t right. (Or, on a positive note, safety situational awareness can also assure you that all is fine.)

Safe Sense knows how important it is to develop and heighten situational awareness and our first mission is to motivate everyone – regardless of where you live, work, socialize or visit – to invest the effort into making it instinctive.

Choose to stay safe by not taking unnecessary chances with your life and the lives of others.

Choose to develop safety situational awareness and significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of an assault, robbery, or theft. Paying close attention to your surroundings and taking the right actions could deny someone with negative intentions toward you, your vehicle, your home, and your property the ability to follow through on them.

So, what is a safety situational awareness tactic? Here’s a sneak peek!

When you’re walking, are you ever on your phone? If so, stop! Whenever, wherever you’re walking, keep your eyes up – look straight ahead and look around at all times.

When you get in your car, maybe after shopping or leaving work, how long do you sit in the driver’s seat fumbling around with things? Do you take your time setting up navigation, or checking your phone for texts, emails, or missed calls? If so, stop! Granted, setting navigation and other car settings are valid things to do before you start driving, but be efficient and every few seconds, look around your car and the parking lot.

Learning, practicing, and using Safe Sense’s safety awareness guidance and insight will benefit you. The above tips are just two of the many ways you can increase your situational awareness while out in public. While it’s true that most questionable situations won’t necessarily result in any harm coming to you, it is always better to be on the safe side and use your safe sense.

Crime happens. But it doesn’t have to happen as often! Safety situational awareness can reduce crime in any community!

If we all acquire healthy, productive safety awareness habits and become intentional about remaining safe and keeping the people around us safe, we will each be actively doing our part to make our communities – the places where we live, work, and play – safe and secure.

Take a look at the various safety situational awareness services, workshops, and materials we provide to individuals, businesses, schools, and social groups. We intentionally designed our safety situational awareness materials, training, and services packages so they are affordable, accessible, and actionable. Our objective is to empower everyone to keep themselves and their loved ones safe by arming them with the most effective, legal, easy-to operate, non-threatening, non-politicized weapon in existence – safety situational awareness.

Although no type of safety advice and training is 100% guaranteed, knowing, and regularly practicing Safe Sense’s personal safety precaution techniques and tactics can help minimize your chances of becoming a victim.

Safe Sense opposes living in fear. Living in fear is not an option. Being mindful of your surroundings by simply being aware is key to playing an active role in keeping yourself safe.

And, in case you were wondering what could have been done to prevent someone from stealing all the purchases you made, just one situationally aware move was needed. After putting your bags in your trunk, (never the back seat) get in your car, and drive away to park somewhere else. Then the thief (with “negative intentions”) who was watching that area of the parking lot wouldn’t have given you, or the valuable stuff in your car, another thought. And your shopping spree would have been a lot more fun!
