“Situational awareness plays a large role in preventing – or mitigating – all types of safety hazards and criminal assaults,” says Detroit resident, community advocate, author, and business owner, Sharlene Burris. As Safe Sense, LLC Founder, Burris has authored three personal safety books – the most current being Community Safety Guide – published in March 2025.
In recognition of ‘National Safety Month’ the book launch and book signing event for Community Safety Guide is on Wednesday, June 18 at the Community Center at A.B. Ford from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Sharlene will be joined by colleague and friend, Markeith Robinson, a gun safety and security consultant who is featured in a special section of Burris’ most recent publication.
This event will also spotlight Safe Sense Workplace Safety Guide and Safe Sense Field Service Safety Guide – Parole/Probation Officers Edition, the first two Safe Sense Safety Guides authored by Burris.
Dedicated to her hometown Detroit community, Burris is actively involved in a variety of Detroit community events and initiatives. Among them, she Chairs the Eastern Market Development Corp. Board, a member of the Joe Louis Greenway Neighborhood Planning Study Community Leadership Team, a Member/Owner of the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op.
Sharlene Burris is available throughout Metro Detroit to conduct safety situational awareness workshops, training, and consulting for employers, communities, associations, school systems, colleges, universities, and individuals. Determined to empower everyone – more agency over their safety wherever they are or whatever they’re doing – from having fun at a tailgate or concert to walking in a parking lot – Sharlene Burris exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity of fellow Detroiters who are making a positive difference locally, regionally and nationally.
